“Sigh
/ Omelas” is a poignant, moving drama about children who are affected
by and afflicted with HIV and AIDS. This powerful play is based upon
Steve’s experiences working with these children in a summer camp. He
portrays 4 characters and the narrator. His original dramatic text is
interwoven with Ms. LeGuin’s haunting and provocative story of the fictional
utopian city of Omelas, where people live in perpetual happiness and
joy . . . but at what cost?
Although Steve has performed this piece in professional theater venues,
the most valuable performances for him have been at the middle school
and high school level, where he has had the opportunity to use “Sigh
/ Omelas” as a vehicle to help students understand the importance of
volunteer work in their local and world-wide communities. Some of the
school districts he has performed in are Newton, MA, Pawtucket, RI, Central
Falls, RI, New Haven, CT and New Cannan, CT.
Steve has performed “Sigh / Omelas” at the Boston Center for the Arts,
the Theater of Newburyport, MA, The Gamm Theatre in Pawtucket, RI, Colby
College in Waterville ME, Wheaton College of Norton, MA and at the University
of Richmond, VA.
